Alfred Firmin Loisy(1857-1940), profesor, preot si teolog, a devenit  principalul exponent al modernismului biblic in Biserica Romano-Catolica, argumentand ca criticismul biblic ar trebui aplicat la interpretarea Scripturii. Pozitiile sale teologice l-au pusadesea in conflict cu autoritatile ecleziastice ale epocii sale, precum si cu papii Leon XIII si Pius X. Pina in 1931 a condus catedra de istoria religiilor la College de France. Moare in 1940.
